Evolutionistic Evangelism

Evolutionistic Evangelism
Robert Wurtz II

For they have healed the wound of the daughter of My people slightly, Saying, “Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace. (Jeremiah 8:11)

It is an awful thing to pronounce a matter finished when it has only begun. To claim that a person is “healed,” when, in fact,  they are not, is to end their pursuit of the remedy. This is the  danger in our text. The people were in a state of perpetual backsliding. Their ongoing iniquity was like a festering leprous sore — designed to kill them. In fact, they were so hardened in their sins that they were unable to blush. They were past feeling. All the while, from the prophet to the priest — they were all given to covetousness. All they could think about was more money and more stuff. They lusted after all kinds of things. From these backslidden hearts issued the words, “Peace, peace!” However, it was a cruel pitiless lie.

False Prognosis

God told them that they had preached, literally, “shalom, shalom.” In Hebrew, words are doubled-up for emphasis. This is “absolute peace.” Keep in mind that the word shalom means more than an absence of conflict, it denotes well being. This answers to the Hebrew word for wound. In other words, they are being told “it is utterly well” with them when in fact, there is no wellness at all. Their words had only “slightly” healed their festering wound. This word slightly in Hebrew denotes a flippancy towards the seriousness of the problem.

Modern Application

In modern times, we often have a similar situation as played out in Israel. Because so many who preach the Gospel are given to covetousness, they are unwilling to preach a message that will bring true healing to peoples’ sin-problem. Why? Because repentance does not sell. In fact, it will empty the offering basket in many cases. What happens? They heal the wound “slightly” by preaching messages that do little more than serve as a numbing agent to stop the “pain” (conviction). In place of repentance and faith, their message is more along the lines of (you are) “well, well;” “healed, healed;” or “forgiven, forgiven.” Nothing is said about the deadly wound that is ready to destroy the soul. In fact, people are made to feel good about their condition, when God is trying to bring conviction and Godly sorrow.

An Inadequate Beginning

God’s unaltering plan is to bring many sons (and daughters) unto glory. (Hebrews 2:10) To accomplish this, people have to be born of God. (John 3:3; 1 John 3:9; 1 John 4:7) This is not a “slight” healing: it is a radical change of the inward man. In fact, the change is so thorough and profound that afterwards Christ is not ashamed to call us brethren. (Hebrews 2:11) This is a new creature in Christ. The old passes away and all becomes new. God gives us a new heart and a new spirit with all new desires. Nevertheless, multitudes are cooming to Christ who were never born again. Ministers led them in a prayer or had them sign a church membership card; but they were never genuinely changed.

Most Christians are hostile to the teachings of Darwinian Evolution; however, the doctrine itself is thoroughly embeded in their thinking process. When most Christians think of Christianity, they think of a person starting out with a simple confession of faith and then slowly evolving into a child of God. In other words, with each passing month or year, they become more like Christ and less like the Devil. This is false.

True Christianity begins with a crisis event in which a person passes from death unto life — from the power of Satan to the power of God. This crisis event is known theologically as regeneration. The person is ” born ” of the Spirit (See the illustration above). Once they are ” born ” again, they can begin growing in grace. This is what Jesus was referring to in John 3:3 when He said,You must be born again.” This is a transformation by the Holy Spirit that renders a person a child of God. They were of their father the devil — performing his lusts; however, now they are born from above and God is working in them both to will and to do His good pleasure. Anything less than this result and we are back in Jeremiah 8:11 having been “healed slightly.”

Another Tragic Mindset

Sometimes false teachings go together like cause and effect. We get one thing wrong and generally some other error is close by. In addition to our subject “Evolutionistic Evangelism,”  we also have to deal with “Industrial Innovations.” That is, we have many innovations that have come into evangelism since the industrial revolution that place the emphasis on speed and quantity, rather than birth and quality. What is the goal of an assembly line? Speed. Obviously, there is a desire to maintain a standard, but everything is systematic. This is light years from, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8 NKJV) For over a hundred years society has been conditioned to want to speed things up. Nevertheless, we can’t speed up New Birth.

Since so few are willing to preach a message that will bring about New Birth; and even fewer are willing to pray patiently with people to see them pass from death to life; we have a deficiency in new births and an abundance of folks that are trying to “evolve” into being a child of God. It is impossible.

For they have healed the wound of the daughter of My people slightly, Saying, “Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace. (Jeremiah 8:11)

Unconverted and Unconcerned

Unconverted and Unconcerned
Robert WurtzII

“The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?” (John 3:2–4 KJV)

Nicodemas came to Jesus by night, perhaps, to ask some questions. Many people today are asking questions like, “Why is there so much evil in the world?” or “Why are so-called Evangelical ministries compromising on homosexuality?” “Why are Christian ministers more afraid of holiness than sinfulness?” Nevertheless, our generation must insert itself into this passage in John 3:2-4 in order to understand what is happening in our times.

Jesus, knowing the thoughts of all men cut to the very heart of Nicodemas’ lack in understanding. No need for Jesus to answer a hundred questions and the man end up as confused as ever or even arguing the finer points. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Jesus is saying that until a person is Born of the Spirit, they have no perceptive and reasoning capacity- nor experience in the things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. There can be no aliens in the Kingdom of God; one is either Born Again or they are not a partaker of it. To try to explain the principals of the Kingdom of God to the unregenerate is to speak gibberish to them. However, this reality changes the moment a person is Born of the Spirit.

Blind to the Main Thing

It is shocking to hear the Lord asked Nicodemas, Are you a teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things? Jesus reveals the main problem with mankind as a sort of “master key” to all relevant subjects, and yet dear Nicodemas did not have a clue. He was a teacher but did not have a grasp of the very subject he was teaching. I recall how one of my son’s math teachers in High School was a genius and had such a grasp of the subject that he did not need or use the text book to teach. He could explain the subject to even the most difficult students so that they could grasp the concepts. This is what happens when the teacher actually understands what they are teaching. Nicodemas was a teacher in Israel and did not know the main subject.

I don’t believe the Lord was angry that he did not know, maybe disappointed. Nevertheless, the Lord suggests that Nicodemas should have known. It would almost be like a doctor not knowing something as basic as CPR or that a person needs food and water to live. New birth is as basic to Christianity as it gets; however, like Nicodemas, many teachers and ministers simply do not understand. Multitudes of Christians have never been told “you must be born again” from a person that actually understood the statement. It became cliche between the 50s and 80s until everyone that “started to church” and “agreed with basic evangelical doctrine” was considered a “born again Christian.” This fact has muddied the waters to the point that only a miracle of God’s grace will once again bring clarity to the subject.

Born of the Flesh

Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:7-10 NKJV)

There are two categories of people in the world: they who are of their father the Devil and they who are of their Father in Heaven. It is a hard saying, but we have to come to reality. We are all born into this world in a sinful, selfish-state. This selfishness manifests first as rebellion against authority, and later as full-on rebellion against God (usually about the time a person becomes a teenager). People generally spend their whole lives doing things that they know are wrong (we call it sin) – resisting every dealing of God and conscience. When the person knows they are doing wrong, they just push on through the uneasiness. This hardens the person into a sinful, calloused person who needs a whole lot more than a new years resolution or a makeover. They need new birth.

As a consequence of the fall of man, we are all born “in Adam” by first birth. That is, we are born “in the flesh” and “of the flesh.” God is bringing many sons unto glory, but to accomplish this we have to be reborn of the Spirit. Perhaps you are asking now as Nicodemas, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? This is where modern evangelistic practice proves itself to be in a spirit of Nicodemas that has taught many things without understanding what they were teaching.I suggest, this is why we are losing Christianity.

Shoddy Evangelism

Nobody knows better than God that people must individually be born again. Nobody knows better than God that man is totally helpless to accomplish this by himself. The principal of New Testament scripture is that God knows what we need and desires to give more than we desire to receive. God does not pass out stones where He knows we need bread, etc. So we need not stress on the thought that God is somehow up in heaven playing games with people telling them they must have something – and then refusing to provide it. The question is not on God’s end – it is on man’s end. Paul asked the great question, “How shall they hear without a preacher?”

In the last 120 years the goal of preaching changed from getting folks genuinely born again, to convincing them to pray a little prayer and start to attend church. I trace the history of this fact in my latest book Televangelicalism. When the evangelist does not know the purpose for which he is preaching, how could he possibly achieve the goal? Moreover, if he downplays the necessity of being born again, because everyone else is doing it, how long will it be until absolutely nobody is being born again? If Jesus says, “you must be born again” how dare a man come along and undermine the emphatic nature of the fact. The problem over the last 120 years has been than men got bolder in repackaging the words of Jesus until it has made the word of God of no effect. You must be born again is a stand alone fact. How we get to that reality can be discussed, but it is an absolute truth that we cannot side step. it is a necessary process that cannot be substituted or circumvented.

Unconverted and Unconcerned

If ten generations of preachers in a row decided to follow the popular trends until few now live that still believe in regeneration (New Birth), it is the responsibility of those who rediscover the discarded truth to begin studying and preaching it. More importantly, they must know with certainty that they are in fact born again. Take John Wesley for an example. He began preaching at a young age having been raised to know God and his word from his mother Suzanna’s knee. It was finally at the age of 35 (thirty-five), on board a storm tossed ship on the Atlantic that he finally realized that he was not truly regenerated. What a shocking revelation! He had never truly placed his faith and trust in Christ. He was raised in church and even preached. He had strict codes of living, but he was not truly changed. Converted at 35 he preached for 53 years and died at 88. However, he had had 88 years of teaching with 35 years of them in an un-reborn state.

Likewise many today are in the same boat. They have been in church all their lives, but cannot tell of a time when they truly surrendered to God, repented of their sin, and placed their 100% faith in Christ alone for salvation. Many have a “learned faith” in which they figured out how to do it and because they can imitate Christian conduct they believe they are one. How about it? Have you ever come to a place in your life where you realized you were not really born again? Can you remember a time when you were in anguish for your sinful condition and cried out to God to change you? We mustn’t fool ourselves. Are you concerned that you have not really been born again or are you trusting in the powerless words of a well intended, but incompetent evangelist who told you to pray a prayer and you will be born again? The first step is to be concerned. Take yourself to the night where Nicodemas came to Jesus and let God lead you to truth from there.

The Conversion-less Church

The Conversion-less Church
Robert Wurtz II

Act 3:19    Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of The Lord.

There was a time when mainstream Christianity neglected the necessity of conversion and regeneration, but it seems evident that in 2014, they are lost altogether. Therefore, we are losing our identity as Christians in the mainstream. Today a person can simply start attending church, and it is assumed they are right with God. The question is almost never asked, “have you had a conversion experience?”

Before Billy Sunday, people were expected to pass from death unto life, in reality, not merely doctrinally. Today, if a person expresses interest in church or Jesus, or makes a public profession of faith, they are assumed born again. Sadly, we have almost completely lost the doctrine of new birth. The late Leonard Ravenhill used to lament this fact and gave many illustrations to drive the point home. One stands out, “I can’t get my car through a car wash in a few minutes, how can a person pass from death to life, put on Christ, etc.?”

I had a thought come to mind while walking out of an auto parts store the other day. “Have you ever heard of a class designed to teach dogs to bark?” How about, “Chase the mailman?” What if we decided to hold night classes to teach cats to “meow.” You might be thinking, that would be absurd! Why? Because you should not have to teach what should come naturally. Nevertheless, today, you have to teach professors of Christ not just the difference between the holy and the profane or what it means to be in the Spirit, but you have to debate them on it. It is so “not who they are” that they can’t even relate to basic Christian principals. Why? It is not natural. You are trying to teach the cat to bark and the dog to meow.

There is a great consequence in the churches for abandoning new birth. If people are not being converted in such a way that they can convincingly explain that they are now trusting Christ, have repented and have been changed by the power of God, then they are probably not a Christian. I can almost hear a chorus of a thousand guns proclaiming, “you’re being judgmental!” Well, we need to know those that labor among us and measure their experience by the word of God, especially before placing them in ministry.

God does not need and I dare to say want talented people, but talent is what we have replaced true conversion with. The world worships talent, but God can accomplish His will without it. The scripture does not say that it is by our might, power and talent; rather, it is not by might nor by power but by my Spirit says The Lord. And we need to quit calling everything “anointed” that is really only talent. That is most of the problem. The masses are being duped into thinking that the talented motivational speaker is anointed, the talented musician is anointed, etc.; anointing happens when a person is truly, and I mean truly, (not in the repeat a prayer or start to church style) born from above. When they have had a genuine conversion experience, they have taken the first step.

I sometimes wonder whether the day will come when the elect will be surrounded by an angry and almost militant  unconverted visible church. If you think about it, we are fast heading there. There is not a day goes by when a brother or sister tries to take a stand for the faith, holiness, righteousness separation from the world, etc., and not have to argue with so-called Christians. It’s like a whole generation doesn’t even know what team they are on. Why? Lack of genuine conversion. The nature is still of sinfulness. They are in a carnal state, and they argue from that vantage point. It’s all they understand. The world’s point of view makes sense to them, and their only defense is to declare the elect as critical and unloving.

It’s time for those who are left that have experienced and understand genuine conversion and new birth to start preaching and teaching it. The Gospel is being reduced to a means of getting sins forgiven – coupled with your best life now. The churches are being filled with people that have never truly been converted and almost nobody is even talking about it in the main stream. Genuine spiritual change is being substituted with all kinds of counterfeits. Time is winding down. Christ is returning for a Church without spot or wrinkle; what will He do when He finds multitudes unconverted and unconcerned?

A Change of Heart Or Changed Heart?

A Change of Heart Or A Changed Heart?
Robert Wurtz II

The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the tablet of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars. (Jeremiah 17:1)

Jeremiah was lamenting the fact that though the children of Israel ought to have had the laws of God written upon the tablets of their hearts, sin and idolatry was written in its place. The several “thou shalt not” commands had been replaced with “thou shalls.” The repeated warnings not to harden our hearts, given to us by the writer to the Hebrews, come into view. We hardened ourselves when we refuse to hearken to the many impressions that God makes upon our hearts when we are tempted to sin. We are further hardened by the deceitfulness of sin once we indulge in it. Taken together the heart can become as hard as a stone tablet. Such was the case with the remnant Judah. Their sin was written, not with a quill or a pencil, but with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond.

A Change Of Heart

As important as it was to have a change of heart about their condition, the people of Judah needed a new heart. We hear it every year this time. People decide upon their new years resolutions. Physical fitness centers see an explosion of new members for a few months, but by summer, things are back to normal again. Why? Because there is a great difference between a “change of heart” and a “changed” heart. The one can only ever be temporary, the other has a chance to be permanent. A changed heart is a brand new heart. God removes the old and installs the new. Amen.

The Wretchedness of the Heart

It is hard for us to comprehend the power of God. We throw words around like “omnipotence” and “all powerful”, but hesitate when it comes to believing that God can really give a person a new heart. Jeremiah asks the question later in our chapter:

The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? I, Jehovah, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. (Jeremiah 17:9-10)

John Wesley adds to Jeremiah’s sobering diagnosis, “There is nothing so false and deceitful as the heart of man; deceitful in its apprehensions of things, in the hopes and promises which it nourishes, in the assurances that it gives us; unsearchable by others, deceitful with reference to ourselves, and abominably wicked, so that neither can a man know his own heart, nor can any other know that of his neighbor’s.” Who can know it? God does. What can discern its thoughts and intents? The word of God.

All things are naked and open to the eyes of God. He knows the heart and He watches it. this is how He caught Satan plotting to rebel in Heaven. “You have said in your heart…, God said to him.” Jesus added that it was from the heart issues forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings. (Matthew 15:19)

The Power to Change a Heart

Nebuchadnezzar is a man that had some bad thoughts in his heart. He was proud and attributed to himself all of the accomplishments of his life. Little did he know, God was watching and listening. In fact, God warned him that the next time he acted out in this way, he would drive him from men and into the field like a wild beast. Sort of like a child that forgets that his or her parent has warned them of the consequences of continued behavior, Nebuchadnezzar, in time, forgot what God said.

At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon. The king spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty? While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from thee: and thou shalt be driven from men; and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over thee; until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. (Daniel 4:29-32)

As he had been warned, God gave this man the heart of a beast and he began behaving like a wild animal. His whole nature changed from a man who enjoyed the plush pleasures fitting a king, to an animal that wallowed in the field and chewed grass like an ox. He was a regular circus act and could not help himself. What happened? This was no “change of heart.” This was no new years resolution. It was a changed heart performed by the hand of God. One day he is lying in his soft pillow bed, the next day he is laid out in the field like cattle. And all that had to happen was God change his heart. he went from man to beast with a proverbial flip of a switch. This is the kind of power for change that God wields. Once the man fulfilled the conditions spoken in the dream, the heart was changed. O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from thee: and thou shalt be driven from men; and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. After the time passed, God flipped the switch again and the heart returned to a man’s heart. He went back to the palace and became king again. It was amazingly easy for God to effect this level of change.

A New Heart
If God changed Nebuchadnezzar, do you think He could change Judah? They had hardened hearts emblazon with sin. Their altars were before their eyes and they went after sin like an Ox goes after grass. They did it to themselves. Maybe you agree that God, in theory, could change them. Did He want to? What did He say?

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep mine ordinances, and do them. (Ezekiel 36:26-27)

Hebrews chapter 8 and 10 explains that this is the fundamental aspect of the New Covenant (everlasting covenant). God wants to give a new heart to those that will turn to Him in true repentance and faith. He wants to take out the heart of stone and install a heart of flesh. A soft heart- sensitive to His impressions. He wants to work in us to will and do His good pleasure. Like Nebuchadnezzar, the conditions have to be met. We cannot change our own heart, but we can go to God for it. We can make use of every means of grace that He had made available.

Many people are bound in sin and feel they can never change. Their problem? They have had a “change of heart” many times, but have never had a changed heart. That’s the difference. Nevertheless, we can be partakers of the Divine Nature and escape the corruption that is in the world through lust. But we have to receive a new heart. Not a mere “change of heart,” but a “changed heart.”

Man’s Condition – God’s Solution (Part 1)

Man’s Condition – God’s Solution (Part 1)
Robert Wurtz II

In an age when sin and iniquity are advancing upon the visible church from without; while the unregenerate fill up the ranks from within; it would be tempting to raise the white flag, throw in the towel, and declare all is lost. When the Western Nations are in a state of total moral collapse; and the only resounding call for revival from within the churches focuses on everything but genuine repentance- it would be easy to despair even of life. Darkness is covering the land as sure as it covers the midnight hour. However much the vexation of these facts move the saints to despair, they have not taken God off guard. He destroyed this world once already. Todays rebellion is just another repeat of wickedness in His history book. Why does it keep happening? From Satan that rebelled in Heaven, Adam, who rebelled in the Garden, and Israel that rebelled in the Wilderness- Sin has made its mark for destruction, and free moral agents have received it.

God Made Man Upright

Man was not created a sinner or with a sinful nature. (Eccl. 7:29) God wanted a creature in His own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26); not little gods, but sons and daughters. God’s plan to make man in His image has not changed (Jeremiah 29:11).

Adam was created innocent (Genesis 2:25). There was nothing in Adam’s original constitution that predisposed him to rebel against God (Genesis 1:27 Genesis 1:31). He was designed with good natural desires for things such as knowledge, eating, leadership, procreation, etc., that drew him to do these important things as part of God’s plan. God knew that man’s desires would result in conflict with His revealed will; so he gave Adam a couple of commandments. Understand that there are and were various ways of fulfilling those good, natural desires (Genesis 2:16-17). Temptation is an appeal to the intellect to fulfill a good natural desire in a bad way. Natural desires do not discriminate, so man must resist the desire to disobey God in the fulfilling of his or her desires. In other words, God gave boundaries as to right and wrong ways to fulfill those good natural desires. In the beginning man was not inclined to sin by any satanic force, only tempted to sin through the senses and reason. This changed when Adam opened the door to Sin in the Garden of Eden.

The Importance of a Right Understanding

Soteriology is the study of salvation. One of the fundamental elements of the subject biblically is what came to be known as Original Sin. There are various ways this doctrine is described, but typically, it is understood to mean that men and women are born into this life as sinners with a sinful nature (Ephesians 2:1-3, Psalm 51:5). Some more radical ideas suggest that the will is in complete bondage to the Sinful Nature and in a state of Total Depravity. This essentially means that man in his fallen state cannot rightly obey God at all. Man is spiritually dead and “spiritually dead people” can’t do anything spiritual.

I affirm that man, because of the sin of Adam, is born constituted a sinner; nevertheless, this constitution by no means relieved man of his free choice (Romans 5:19, Joshua 24:15). We inherit Adam’s disposition to sin just like we inherit a disposition to physical death. All people, by their first birth, are born in Adam and experience the consequences of his actions. Constitutional Sin is our inheritance (as it were).

Nevertheless, even though man cannot help but be bent towards sin, God is just in condemning man for his sin because man could have chosen at any given time not to sin (Romans 2:1). It is a resistible propensity. We can resist good, and we can resist evil. This is the essential message of Romans chapters 1-3. However, God does not want people having resist an inward propensity to sin. He wants them to have a propensity to do righteousness. This is what Romans 5:19 tells us. By one mans sin many were constituted sinners; in the same way, by one man’s obedience shall many be constituted righteous. What Adam did made people sinners; what Jesus did on the cross has the effect of making men righteous. That is, through Christ man can be regenerated into a new creature that obeys God and performs righteousness as a natural tendency. If we do not understand man’s need for regeneration, then we cannot understand rightly all that Christ has accomplished on the cross.

Two Ways Scripture Uses the Word ‘sin’ (Sin and sin)

We need to take a moment and define some of our terms so we are talking about the same thing. First, the Bible speaks of Sin (the root) and sins (the fruit). I will try to make the distinction by using upper case Sin for “Sin” the Root and lower case sin for “sins” the fruit.

Wherefore, as by one man Sin entered into the world, and death by Sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Romans 5:12)

If something “enters” the world, there was a time when it was not here and then it “entered.” This is common sense. What is this Sin that entered the human race through Adam?

We must stop and point out that Sin (the root) is older than the human race. Sin is a corruption of the once good nature of Satan (Ezekiel 28:15). This corruption was first manifested in Satan when he became self-conscious and self-willed. No one had ever disobeyed or challenged God, as far as we know, before Satan; he pioneered rebellion (Ezekiel 28:12-18). Sin manifests as a clash of the creatures will with the Creator’s will (note the five “I will’s” in Isaiah 14:13-15). When Satan rebelled against God, a degeneration took place inside him. Regeneration can be defined as when Jesus Christ is ruling and reigning over a person(s); degeneration is when we are ruling ourselves. This mysterious corruption of Satan’s nature is what we know as Sin, the root, or the dynamic. It is an infectious rebellious nature that we could call the law of Sin (See Romans 8:2).

Sin Entered the Human Race

Adam opened the door for Sin to enter the world and Death by Sin (Romans 5:12). God told Adam that in the day they ate of the Tree of Life literally, “dying thou shalt die” (Genesis 2:17 YLT). This is the first Death or the ultimate death. Eternal separation from God is the second Death; this is ultimate death as it passes into eternity (Revelation 2:11, Revelation 20:6-14). Adam and Eve died that day and it was a “spiritual death,” as we say. They died in trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1). This is important to understand. Adam and Eve did not die physically in the day they ate of the tree (Genesis 5:5). So what was the death that they died? Their God conscious spirit died and from that day forward all that were born “in Adam” would share in this condition (Genesis 3:23). This is essential to know, because all persons are either “in Adam” or they are “in Christ” (I Corinthians 15:22). Those who are in Adam are under Sin; they who are in Christ are under righteousness.

Man Loses His Relationship With God

The glory of God departed from Adam and Eve in what I would call the first great ICHABOD experience of mankind. The LORD departed. Man was no longer in fellowship with God. The face to face relationship with God was broken off. God had to forsake man or bring instant judgment (physical death, so I think), but He did not leave man alone (Genesis 3:15). I suggest that the reason man did not die physically, at the time they ate of the Tree of Knowledge, was because God had a plan. God left the presence of man so He could begin the process of redeeming man from the Sin that entered the race. He could have just wiped man from the face of the earth, but He chose to redeem us.

Keep in mind that God did not alter His desire to make man in His image and likeness; but in order to keep this plan in play, He had to leave off from fellowship. When God’s unique presence is near, typically, judgment is swift. Many examples of this such as Nadab and Abihu, Ananias and Sapphira, etc. God is omnipresent, but He is not present in the way He desires to be. That requires a place when He can be at home; a righteous and holy environment.

Initial Evidence of a Sinful Nature

Sin entered the world when Adam and Eve believed the lie of Satan and acted on it in faith. They placed themselves and the whole human race under the influence of the spirit of disobedience. They trusted in lies and came into a union with the spirit of this present evil age. These are mysterious things and we cannot speak of them particularly. Spirits are like wind, you can’t see them; you can only see the effects of their influence and presence. John said it simply, whosoever habitually commits sin is a child of the Devil (John 8:44, 1 John 3:8-10). This is strong language, but we have to face reality. Moreover, Sin entered, and Adam and Eve became by nature children of wrath (Ephesians 2). They were driven from the Garden of Eden with a carnal mind at enmity with God (Romans 8:7). God placed Cheribim with flaming swords at the gate of the Garden. Why?

And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: (Genesis 3:22)

God did not want man eternally ratified in a Sinful state. Man’s nature was corrupted and all of Adam’s posterity would be born “In Adam” with that same corrupted nature. This is Sin “the root.” God needed to sever the influence of Sin in man. How? The man Christ Jesus, the last Adam, would have to die to Sin for us. At death, liberation comes for slaves and wives (See Romans chapters 6 & 7). He that is dead is freed from Sin (Romans 6:7). Does one need die to reform their “behavior”? Death was needed to break the slavery to Sin (Romans 6:11). How could God do this? In His infinite wisdom He would destroy the root by The Seed (which was Christ Galatians 3:16).

You will notice that the Cheribim are always standing between man and God (Isaiah 6:2 , Exodus 26:31). This has been the case since the Garden of Eden- though it was not always this way. God walked with Adam and His glory was upon him. This is not to say, necessarily, that he was filled with the Holy Spirit. But surely Adam walked with God in innocence and fellowship. This was God’s design. However, man profaned his sanctuaries through transgression- opening the door to that alien spirit of disobedience to enter. The LORD departed and the spirit of disobedience took up residence. The Glory departed from the Temple (as it were), and since that time all men have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

God’s Plan for Man- More than Obeying the Commandments

God is in the process of bringing many sons unto glory (Hebrews 2:10). Men are born as children of disobedience. They are of their father the devil. How could they become children of God? Jesus said it plainly in John 3:3; you must be born again. Understand that a person is made a child of God through the process of spiritual regeneration so that they are no longer children of disobedience. This is why John says, “now” are you the sons of God (I John 3:2). There was a time when they were not sons of God, but now they are. This is an absolute miracle of God.

One cannot become something, by nature, simply by practicing. A dog cannot become a cat by practice (Jeremiah 13:23). Only if something happens of supernatural effect can the essential nature of anything be changed. In another figurative picture, the nature of man is to bring forth “thorns and briars”- are rejected, and near unto cursing who’s end is to be burned (Hebrews 6:8). An apple tree cannot produce oranges; and a thorn tree cannot produce a useful fruit. Nevertheless, because we have those things that accompany salvation, a better thing can be expected of us (Hebrews 6:9). What is it? The fruit of the Spirit (Matthew 12:33).

It is impossible for a person, by means of keeping the law, to yield the fruit of the Spirit- because in order to yield the Spirit’s fruit- one must have the Holy Spirit. A person can imitate good behavior, but God wants a change of heart and spirit. He wants us to do good by nature. We have to have the indwelling Holy Spirit to be what God wants us to be. We have to have “begun in the Spirit” (Galatians 3:3). This is God’s design for man.

The Law of Moses, though Spiritual, falls woefully short of bringing many sons unto glory because it cannot work in them to will and do God’s good pleasure (Romans 7:14, (Philippians 2:13). All the law could do was show man the standard. In the process of giving man His law, that law brought the “law of Sin” to the surface (Romans 7:13). Paul says that when the commandment came Sin revived – and I died (Romans 7:9). What is it? Sin took advantage of the commandment in such a way that Paul found that what was ordained to be of life actually became a means of death. Why? The Law gave the sinful nature something to rebel against (Romans 7:23 Romans 7:11).

The children of Disobedience

There is an alien spirit at work in the unregenerate causing them to will and to do Satan’s lusts and desires, under the guise of their own good pleasure. This nature can be restrained with institutional law, just as a dangerous animal can be trained to perform in a circus or at a zoo. This training gives the impression that the wild nature in the animal does not exist. Nevertheless, at times, the force of the animal’s true nature comes out, and people get hurt or killed. Any training based change can only ever be temporary. This is important. This is why you cannot teach a person to be a Christian. You can teach them to try to imitate Christ- but it is contrary to their nature. In time, they will make war with the things of God, because their mind and heart are at enmity with God.

Eph 2;1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Charles G. Finney in the 1800s argued against Original Sin, I believe, because he trusted more in his present experience than in the biblical revelation. The proof that men are spiritually dead is that they fall short of the Glory of God. Man cannot in himself or herself rise to the level of the Glory of God. No matter how well they keep the commandments they still have to deal with the fact that the Holy Spirit in not working in them both to will and to do God’s good pleasure. It’s not about whether or not a person can to some degree keep the law and ask God to forgive the rest; that is a horrendously low view of what Christ accomplished on the Cross. Nor through fearful judgments and threats can one bring about an end the inward rebellion that must be dealt with through the Cross of Christ.

Why Graft them in if they are already OK?

If men are not dead towards God, why did the Gentiles need to be engrafted into the vine? (Romans 11:24) If the Tree is not corrupt, why does it bring forth thorns and briars? (Matthew 7:16) Trees bring forth after their own kind (Genesis 1:12). If you want to change the tree’s fruit, you have to change the tree’s root (Ezekiel 11:19). Identifying just “where” Sin is holed up in a sinner is a matter of debate; but who can debate the fact that men and women do not bear the fruit of the Spirit of God by their own nature? Who can overlook the masses of humanity bringing forth a steady harvest of thorns and briars?

If man merely needs to repent of sins that are past, and resolve to obey the commandments in the future, why do men need the Holy Spirit in order to be Christ’s? (Romans 8:9) It is because they do not presently have the Holy Spirit in the sense that God desires. They cannot yield the Fruit of the Spirit by nature. Man’s nature is horribly corrupted; not to the extent that he/she cannot obey God; but they do not obey from the heart. They cannot because they are of their Father the Devil and the lusts of their father is their desire (John 8:41-45 see also John 4:34). That is what gratifies them. This is why Jesus said in John 3:3 “Ye must be Born Again.”

When a person becomes a New Creature, they receive a whole new desire. God works in them both to will and do His good pleasure. Regenerate man can bear Fruit. He can love from the heart like God loves. God pours out His love into their heart by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). This is what God wants. Anything less is Law. Anything less is why Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians. A person has to begin and continue in the Spirit in order to be made perfect. Christ is of no effect to those that seek perfection by the Law. It did not get the Jews where God wanted them; it could not change their nature. Christ through the cross can deal with man’s nature and prepare them for the indwelling presence of the Fruit enabling Holy Spirit.
