Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come. (Acts 26:16–22 KJV)


I have chosen to quote this entire passage in context in order to demonstrate once again Paul’s understanding of his own commission. This plain account dates to around 59 CE, 7 years before his martyrdom under Nero. He has been ministering for some 25 years. According to his testimony to Agrippa, the Lord Jesus told him on the road to Demascus, “I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness.” These are two things. A minister conveys truth about God’s word; a witness gives an account of personal experience. He was sent to two groups: his people (the Jews), and the non-Jews (nations or Gentiles). He was to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. 

Paul then tells us that he was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. This implies that Paul understood his commission to be a mandate. He then states that he shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles. The Greek word for “showed” is apaggelloœ and could be translated “declared.” The imperfect active verb tense signifies that he “kept on declaring,” this message. He did not relent. He did not come up with something “new and improved.” What was it? That they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. These are three things: 

1.Change your mind — gladly receiving the word. This mean a person justifies God and not themselves (Luke 7:29). 

2. This change of mind must result in a “turning” or a change of life direction. The Greek word for “turn” could be translated as “return” or “convert.” We must return to God. This is a prerequisite for both forgiveness of sins and receiving the Holy Spirit (Acts 3:19). God does not forgive and pour His Spirit upon rebels whilst they remain on the run. 

3. Do works worthy of repentance. This implies verifiable evidence. The Jews confessed their sins openly and were baptized of John. (Matthew 3:6; Mark 1:5) The first Ephesians were willing to be baptized by immersion twice in order to do things right. (Acts 19:5) Other Ephesian converts burned whole fortunes in curious arts. (Acts 19:19)   

You will recognize all of this as the prepatory message of John the Baptist. In fact, in Lucan theology (Luke and Acts) their is a heavy emphasis on John the Baptist as a prophet as well as his message. It is not the whole message, but it is an essential part of it. Paul “kept on declaring” it. Why? Because it is impossible to go forward in God until repentance genuinely takes place. There is no use in pretending. God knows when our heart is right towards Him. Man can be fooled, but God cannot. Imagine the rich young ruler going on with God without selling all that he had. It could never happen. Why? Because he was unwilling to do what he was required. Likewise, God puts His hand on the controversy between us and Him and we must do what He says.

A Personal Testimony

There is a flow to the Bible that is important to recognize. It moves from the beginning in Genesis all the way to the end in Revelation. No matter who is reading it, we are all somewhere in that flow. As a child I picked up the Bible to read it for the first time. I began with the New Testament Gospel of Matthew. This seemed to be the best place to start. Early on I was brought up to speed concerning a whole series of people who lived in the Old Testament. Then came a series of other people who contributed to the flow.

For the sake of simplicity I came to John the Baptist. This man preached, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Reading those words I had a choice to make. I could do one of three things:

* Believe the message and repent.
* Disobey the message, but keep reading.
* Disobey the message and put the Bible down.

I then came to the teachings of Jesus and what is typically known as The Sermon on the Mount. Here I discovered exactly how God expects people to live. I immediately knew that the words I was reading were the standard upon which I would someday be judged. I can’t explain how I knew that, I can only say that the words struck my conscience in such a way that I knew they were ultimate truth. Three things happened:

* I realized I had done a great many things that were wrong according to Jesus.
* I became conscious of a whole new standard of living that would henceforth influence my actions.
* I tried to some degree to line up with what Jesus said. 

As I continued through the Gospels I read of people Jesus encountered and how they responded to Him. Some were anxious to follow and obey; some went away sorrowful because they were not willing to do what He asked. For the next several years I would halt in a state similar to the Rich Young Ruler. As described before I would disobey the message and put the Bible down.

Over time God used various measures to get me back into the flow again. I would go to church, listen to Christian radio, etc. However, He always brought me back to the last place I left off in the flow of His word. After some months of what the old timers called “a struggle of faith” I realized that I must fully surrender my life to Christ. I tried to go half way; it didn’t work. I tried to go 75%; it didn’t work. I tried to go 99% and that didn’t work either. I was stuck with God putting His hand on the controversy He had with me. It was my “One thing thou lackest, hangup.” 

In the meanwhile, I went to bed most nights saying the sinners prayer in case I died unexpectedly during the night. I knew I was a sinner, but was not willing to fully surrender to God. I kept up appearances. I came to church and said all the right things at the right times. I learned how to do it by watching other people. Pretty soon it seemed that I was being a Christian. However, I knew I was not going on with God. This bothered me greatly. So I picked the Bible up again.

As I read through all the verses God began dealing with me even stronger. He was working to bring me absolutely under His lordship. It took a while for this fact to sink in. Some people are resisting the Holy Spirit and think they can receive Him at the same time. It will never work. Once I learned this, going on with God was not a fuss. 

Regeneration in Two Verses

And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. (Matthew 19:28; Titus 3:5 KJV)

The Greek word for regeneration is only used twice in the New Testament so we don’t have a lot to be confused with. Simply put, “the new birth of the world is to be fulfilled when Jesus sits on his throne of glory.” (A.T. Robertson) This can also be applied to spiritual new birth. A person is born again when the Son of Man (Jesus Christ) sits on the throne of the heart. Titus adds a simple word, “washing” to make washing of regeneration.” This is the Greek word for the laver that existed outside the Tabernacle where the priests were to wash before entering the sanctuary; that is, the earthly Temple of God. This is a picture of baptism; not in water, but in the Holy Spirit. When we are baptized by the Holy Spirit into His one body, we “enter” the Temple — becoming members of that Temple.  This cannot happen without washing. This cannot happen without Christ sitting in the throne of the person’s heart.


Resetting The Message  

On many devices there is a reset button that puts the machine or computer back to its factory default settings. In 2015, we must allow God to perform a “reset” and return the churches of God back to authentic, genuine, regeneration. Many who have been “counseled through” a salvation experience have never known the transforming power of regeneration. 



Without genuine repentance in which a person can show evidence of having turned to God — there can be no regeneration. We have to come through the laver. We can’t come into the Temple through a side door. In fact, multitudes have simply prayed a little prayer and have been told they are “saved.” All that was in view was having sins forgiven. As a consequence they are forced to regard many aspects of our inheritance such as receiving the Holy Spirit as some kind of special “add on” blessing rather than God’s norm.Many stop at what they believe is forgiveness and do not go on. We must determine to allow God to change our minds and our theologies if necessary — to get us back to authentic regeneration.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:6–9 KJV)

How often have we heard the saying, “Well, it’s better than nothing?” What about the sibling notion, “Well, at least they are doing something.” From a Biblical perspective one might say, “Well, nevertheless, Christ is preached.” These sayings are certainly valid in proper contexts; however, what are we to make of them when it’s the Gospel itself that is in view and at risk?

Galatians is the only epistle that Paul wrote with his own hand. Typically he employed an amanuensis to do the writing — as he did the dictating. Men like Tertius (Romans 16:22), Tichicus or Onesimus (Colossians 4:18) wrote the epistles, and Paul would write the salutation at the beginning and end (see 1 Corinthians 16:21, 2 Thess. 3:17). However, in Galatians 6:11 we don’t have the signature of an amanuensis; we have the words, See with what large letters I have written to you with my own hand!” Undoubtedly Paul’s eyesight did not allow him to write in normal sized characters. It must have looked like a first grader had written those words. Why the sudden change of process? Why no amanuensis?

The situation at Galatia was too urgent. He had to get the letter off to the people and right now. When they beheld his writing they must have been horrified. What could possibly be so serious that a man half-blind would take the time to write out with his own hand a letter such as this. Their alarm would not have been unfounded. They had hardly passed the salutation when they were confronted by the sentence, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. The word accursed comes from the Greek anathema and means Divine disfavor. It is the opposite of grace and peace. Paul uses the word again in 1 Corinthians 16:22 where we read, If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come! (NKJV) These sayings strike most Christians as harsh, but that is more of the result of the world’s influence on them than anything else. God is who He is and His word is what it is — not as He is or His word is as seen through the lens of God’s enemies. Comprehending Paul’s use of anathema will go a long way in restoring a proper reverence to God and the Gospel. Otherwise, the offenders will be accursed. 

A Gospel of the Flesh

The enemy doesn’t seem to care what kind of fleshly means he uses, so long as he can get Christians to employ the flesh instead of continuing in the Spirit. What did Paul say? “Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?” (Galatians 3:3 NKJV) This is any means of perfection and maturity in Christ other than walking in the Spirit. Some prefer coming under the Law to walking in the Spirit. It is the flesh. Others are living in sin and abusing grace (trying to) and that is also flesh. Flesh is flesh is flesh is flesh; and it comes in many flavors. Again, the enemy doesn’t care what version of flesh you choose — so long as he can stop you beginning in and continuing in the Spirit. 

The consequence for those who teach these type of things is that they are accursed. Whether they realize it now or not — they… are… accursed. It will be evident in the Judgment if they don’t turn from their ways. Why? Because people who take it upon themselves to pervert the Gospel deserve to be without grace. If they didn’t, God would not have inspired Paul to pronounce a curse on them. Are we nicer than God? Paul said it, “Let them be accursed.” The word let in the Greek is in the present imperative. 

It would seem to me that ministers and teachers would examine what they are preaching and teaching against what Paul has preached to make sure they are not cursed. None are exempt from the possibility of cursing. Not even angels.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Paul preached repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ until the end of his ministry. They who would pervert the Gospel and turn grace into lasciviousness will not admit this. However, we have it in Paul’s own words. Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. (Acts 26:20 emphasis added) From here folks were to be baptized in water and receive the Holy Spirit. This “receiving of the Holy Spirit” is what Paul describes as “having begun in the Spirit…” 

Let us keep our minds on what Paul said, “If anyone preaches any other Gospel than what we have preached to you — let them be accursed.” I can’t feel safe preaching the Gospel according to Martin Luther, Charles Finney, D.L. Moody, Billy Sunday, Bill Bright, Billy Graham, Joel Osteen or (insert favorite preacher here ________): I have to preach the Gospel that Paul preached; that is, if I am to avoid the curse pronounced in Galatians 1. We cannot look to men, we must look to God’s word. Nevertheless, multitudes are willing to risk being cursed and all the while proclaiming to be blessed. How many today are preaching grace, but are really under a curse? Any Gospel that does not result in a Christian receiving the Spirit by the hearing of faith and continuing on walking in that Spirit that they began in… is not Paul’s Gospel. There are a great many names we can apply, but Paul’s would not be one of them. 

Going back under the Mosiac Law is a curse waiting to happen. Bringing in the world’s hair-brained schemes to supplement the Gospel is as much madness as when Sarah tried to help God by giving her husband Abraham an Egyptian slave woman to have relations with. Paul called Ishmael a child born after the flesh. The Gospel is being preached “after the flesh” every time someone tries to freshen it up with worldly – secular – God-hating contributions. What fellowship has light with darkness? Certainly it was serious enough for Paul to rush off a letter written with his own handwriting. I suppose if that didn’t get their attention — nothing would.

“Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.” (Acts 26:19, 20.)


Strong churches are comprised of strong Christians. Spiritual churches are made up of spiritual believers. To gain strong, spiritual Christians we need a genuine Gospel defined in Biblical terms. We don’t have to look far. If we read the scriptures carefully we can develop working definitions of all the terms associated with the Gospel such as repentance, faith, baptism in water, baptism in the Holy Spirit (receiving the Holy Spirit), etc. Bible words have histories and these histories existed in the consciousness of the people that John the Baptist, Jesus and the Apostles preached to. When preaching to the Jews they could refer to an event or a person and suddenly an entire context would come to mind. When the Gospel went to the Gentiles more explaining was required, but the message remained the same and the terms carried the same meaning. If we define Gospel terms Biblically and refuse to succumb to some lesser thing we are enabled to have Christians and churches that are strong and spiritual. If we pour other meanings into these words and settle for lesser standards we will fill the churches of God with goats, tares and chaff. 

What Exactly Did Paul Preach?



What did Paul preach? We have the record in his own words. About twelve years (or two-thirds) into his ministry, Paul went before King Agrippa to give an account of himself. He had been persecuted by Jew and Gentile alike and now has been taken before the authorities. What Paul tells the king is a summary of his ministry up until this time. Paul testified, “Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.” (Acts 26:19, 20. emphasis added) This is an amazing revelation. No more need to wonder what he was preaching in the beginning at Corinth, Demascus, or any other place. Understand that Paul preached essentially the same message to everyone. Therefore, if he says it to Corinth it is likely he has said the same things everywhere. It was a universal message. Some hearers may have been at varying levels of understanding to begin with, but in time they would all be taught the full revelation of all of the issues involved that we piece together in Paul’s writings. Did you notice that what Paul preached everywhere according to Acts 26:19, 20 is essentially the message of John the Baptist? For all that is said about Paul’s preaching, few ever make note of this one fact. Paul preached repentance everywhere he went in the John the Baptist sense of the word. 

Repentance not in vogue



In modern times repentance is marginalized to the extent that if one never read their Bible and only listened to TV and radio preaching, you may get the idea that Paul and the other Apostles only preached a so-called ‘easy-believism’. That is to say, if a person agrees to certain facts about the Gospel (‘believes’) they are said to be ‘justified by faith’. Some say repentance is somehow an outdated concept that only applied to the Jews of the 1st Century and not to Gentiles, or they suggest some other dismissive theology that widens the narrow gate. I have personally been told that repentance is not necessary for the Gentiles. Promoters of such ideas are contrary to Christ and the Gospel. A.T. Robertson commented on Acts 26:19, 20 saying, “Paul, the greatest of theologians, was an interesting practical preacher.” That is a way of saying that Paul, the greatest theologian, preached that all men should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. If thou wilt be as Paul, do likewise!

Genuine Faith  



When Jesus got ready to give an example of repentance He spoke of Nineveh, that repented at the preaching of Jonah. (Matthew 12:41) Though these people knew very little about God, they believed the message of impending doom (Jonah 3:4) and responded rightly by humbling themselves and mending their ways. Likewise when God got ready to give an example of genuine faith he gave us a long list of names in Hebrews 11. When Paul addresses justification by faith he uses one of those names, Abraham, a man like the people of Nineveh, that knew very little about God. God called Abraham out of the pagan city of Ur of the Chaldees and he obeyed. That is to say, he responded rightly to what God had said. This is genuine faith. Not ‘saying’ he believed and then his actions didn’t match. Each new revelation was met with a new step of faith. Then we come to these words, And he (Abraham) believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. (Genesis 15:6) This passage is quoted some three times in the New Testament and all in relation to justifying faith (Romans 4:3, Galatians 3:6, James 2:23). If we want to understand justifying faith we have to look at Abraham. He is archetype of genuine faith. It was not a one off assent of the mind or will: faith for Abraham was a lifestyle. He made a life of responding rightly to the things God revealed to him. Repentance and Faith are essential to the universal message of the Gospel. Two thousand years have not changed that fact. 

Building Upon Obedience



If a person refuses to believe how can they go on with God? Without faith it is impossible to please God, for they that come to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him. If a person refuses to repent how can they go on with God? God used to overlook ignorance, but now He commands all men everywhere to repent because He has appointed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness. Remember that we defined repentance as what the people of Nineveh did. Some may ask, who needs to repent? Why should men repent? Because Peter tells us that the Holy Spirit is given to those that obey God (Acts 5:32). This is a sobering truth. Going on with God is like walking through a series of doors, each of which requires that we exercise faith in obedience. If we do not believe the message of repentance we will not obey. This means the process is stopped. Sadly, some people want to be baptized in the Holy Spirit and have no desire or intention of repenting. What happens? They seek being ‘filled’ while resisting the Holy Spirit. This is a dangerous thing to do. I’m reminded of Paul, For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. (2 Cor. 11:4) The true Jesus demanded repentance and faith, what does the Jesus you preach or have heard preached demand? And if we are moving in a Gospel that does not require repentance and faith, what spirit can we expect to have received as a result? Apparently there is the possibility that, “…if ye receive another spirit.” At the risk of shocking you even more, I submit that when a person seeks to be filled with the Spirit and are still in flagrant rebellion they open themselves up to all kinds of wierd stuff. You can’t receive and resist the Holy Spirit at the same time, but apparently, accoring to Paul, we can resist the Holy Spirit and receive ‘another spirit’ that would not have been received by Paul. Going on with God means obedience. 

Filled But Rebellious?

When a person is truly repentant in the John the Baptist/Nineveh sense of the word and they are moving in the steps of the faith of Abraham (Romans 4:12), being baptized in water will not be a fuss. A person that is converted in this way is eager to obey God. This is the mindset necessary to receive the Holy Spirit. It can happen instantly or it can take a little time, but the ingredients have to be there. Some want to go on living worldly and like the sons of Sceva think they can receive the Spirit and move in the supernatural. There is no new thing under the sun. If a person is seeking the Spirit for a manifestation of power only they are in the same category with Simon in Acts 8 that thought the power of laying on of hands could be bought with money. Peter’s answer? Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.” (Acts 8:22, 23 NKJV) This is an insightful and instructive passage. 

Water Baptism 

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. (Acts 2:41)



This is the key to right response to God and going on with God, “…gladly receiving the word.” 


Take Phillip for example. He is ministering to the Ethiopian eunuch apparently along these lines. After a time of sharing the Gospel we read, And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Acts 8:36, 38). This man wanted to follow through immediately with his faith. He truly believed, and as a result, water baptism was not a fuss; in fact, the man seemed to nearly run to the water. This is proof that he was legit. No begging. No arguing. No looking up proof texts for excuses. He joyfully obeyed. What’s stopping me right now?! This is how the disciples reacted to Paul at Ephesus, when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Again, this is a sign of true conversion. Jesus told Satan that man was to live by every word that is proceeding from the mouth of God. It was His desire and it will be the desire of those that truly are changed. When we are moving in truth we receive with gladness the word of God.  


Another Gospel or Paul’s Gospel
   


Recently a former US district prosecutor and his wife were building a home in an upscale neighborhood on Long Island, NY near the beach. They set the plans out and wanted the thing exactly as the plans read. When they discovered it would not fit on the property, they tore it down wood framing, foundation and all and started over. It was a $150,000 loss. The botched home construction reminds me of our times. We think that somehow God will allow us to alter the plans or flub the measurements and details and then He comes along and has to tear the thing down and start over again. We cannot improve upon God design for the churches of God. We have to employ the same things as did the Apostles, 1. repentance 2. faith 3. baptism in water 4. baptism in the Holy Spirit and all of them in the genuine article. If we remove any of these things we have no sure foundation. If we don’t have a sure foundation there is no reason to continue to build. There is no telling how many problems that we deal with every day in the churches of God could be greatly reduced if we would simply get back to this most basic message and stick with it.
