The Danger of Backsliding

The Danger of Backsliding
Robert Wurtz II

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Cor. 6:9, 10 NKJV)

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21 NKJV)

For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. (Ephesians 5:5 KJV)

Satan is a cunning master at inducing skepticism towards God and His word. His strategy is the same today as it has always been. In Eden he asked Eve, “Has God said you cannot eat of any tree in the Garden?” (Gen. 3:1 ESV emphasis added) Notice that he called God by the generic word for God, Elohim. He sought to reduce God Almighty in her eyes to a mere god figure (numen divinium). Second, he overstates the command in order to incite a rebellious feeling. Then, as the Father of Lies, he tells Eve she will not surely die and then says that man would become like God — knowing good and evil.

Today, there is a wholesale attack on God’s word — especially in the area of prohibitions. Satan has even managed to transform the practitioners of some sins into protected demographics. It is no longer politically correct (PC) to call sin –sin. However, just as in the Garden of Eden, God has already spoken and 10,000 lies from hell cannot undo what God has plainly said. For this reason it is important to revisit some clearly defined prohibitions from scripture. Paul told the saints repeatedly bout the dangers of these sins and we ought to imitate his approach. Otherwise the cunning craftiness of Satan will eventually lull multitudes into the same trap he took Eve in.

Understanding the Verbs

Jesus tells us in Matthew 5 and Mark 10 who will enter the Kingdom. Paul tells us in Galatians 5:19-21, Ephesians 5:5 and 1 Cor. 6:9, 10 who will not inherit the Kingdom. All of our passages above state or imply that the practitioners of these sins will not inherit the kingdom of God. Our Greek verbs for inherit are in the future active — meaning that there is an inheriting of the kingdom of God that has yet to take place. Our Greek verb for practice is prassonte (root is prassō) and is the verb for habitual practice, not poieō (poy-eh’-o) for occasional doing. Generally speaking, in Paul’s Epistles poieo denotes “an action complete in itself,” while prasso denotes “a habit.” (Vines) The habit of these sins is proof that one is not in the kingdom of God and will not inherit it. (A.T. Robertson) This is not to say that occasionally doing these sins is somehow OK, it is not. But we need to know exactly what we are being warned of. These sins can and must be repented of so as not to continue in the practice of them.

Forewarned

Paul tells the Ephesians, “(…) for this you know.” The means he has warned them before. They are quite aware of these truths. He tells the Galatians, “(…) of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” He asks the Corinthians, “(…) do you not know?” These statements all imply that for Christians this should be common knowledge.

In case some would seek to dismiss these truths, he adds the phrase “be not deceived” (1 Cor. 6:9). Paul is telling them not to deceive themselves or allow others to deceive them into living like Pagans and yet believing they are still in the kingdom. All such sinners are outside of the kingdom of God. This is an awful judgment. They will not be citizens of that kingdom and will not receive the benefits of being in the kingdom. The practice of these sins disqualifies a person from the future inheritance of the kingdom of God unless they are repented of.

Understanding the Sins

Paul has two lists in 1 Cor. 6:9, 10, one with repetition of oute, neither (fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, or malakoi, abusers of themselves with men or arsenokoitai or sodomites as in 1 Tim. 1:10 a late word for this horrid vice, thieves, covetous), the other with ou not (drunkards, revilers, extortioners). Paul’s adds to this list in Galatians 5 the works of the flesh.

1. Fornicators (porneia, prostitution, harlotry. Illicit sexual relations for money/lust)
2. Idolators (eidōlatreia, worship of idols, eating things as sacrificed to idols)
3. Witchcraft/Sorcery (pharmakeia, a drug, the ministering of mind altering drugs)
4. Adulterers (moichos, marital infidelity. Illicit relations with a married person)
5. Effeminate (malakos, soft as in Matt. 11:8, yields their body to homosexual uses)
6. Sodomites (arsenokoites, one who lies with a male as with a female vise versa)
7. Uncleanness (akatharsia, reckless lustfulness and pleasure seeking)
8. Lewdness (aselgeia, outrageous, unbridled, shameless, lust)
9. Thieves (kleptai, a thief.)
10. Covetous (pleonektēs, eager for more. Greedy of gain)
11. Drunkards (methai, drunken excesses, Luke 21:34; Rom. 13:13)
12. Extortioners (harpax, to take things by force. )
13. Revilers (loidoros, railing on people with rude talk. 1 Sam. 25:14 of Nabal)
14. Sinful personal relations expressed by eight words in Galatians 5, all old words, sins of the spirit, like enmities (exthrai, personal animosities), strife (eris, rivalry, discord), jealousies (zēlos or zēloi, MSS. vary, our very word), wraths (thumoi, stirring emotions, then explosions), factions (eritheiai, from erithos, day labourer for hire, worker in wool, party spirit), divisions (dichostasiai, splits in two, dicha and stasis), heresies (haireseis, the very word, but really choosings from haireomai, preferences), envyings (phthonoi, feelings of ill-will). And such like (kai ta homoia toutois). And the things like these (associative instrumental toutois after homoia, like). It is not meant to be exhaustive, but it is representative.

Some Final Warnings from the Revelation

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)

Here we have six more things to add to the list not already covered:

15. Fearful (deilos, timid. Christians that fall back under persecution, etc.)
16. Unbelieving (apistos, disloyalty, unbelieving and without trust in God.)
17. Abominable (bdelysso, to pollute, to turn away because of a stench. (Rom. 2:22)
18. Murderers (phoneus, murder, homicide, man-slayer, assassin)
19.  Whoremonger (pornos, man who sells his body for lust or for hire)
 20.  All Liars (pseudes, seudos is a noun found in nine contexts, meaning “lie” or “lying.” Lying is a natural expression of Satan’s character (John 8:44), the embodiment of the evil one in 2 Thess. 2:9, 11. Rom. 1:25 refers to the fundamental attitude underlying the sin of idolatry — exchanging the truth of God for a lie. Rev. 21:27; 22:15 refer to those who utter lies as having no part whatever with the people living in the heavenly city. (Renn-Bible Words, Steven D. Renn)

One Nation Under Sin (Pharmakea and Sexual Immorality)

One Nation Under Sin (Pharmakea and Sexual Immorality)
Robert Wurtz II

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. (John 8:31-36)

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. (Romans 6:16–18 NKJV)

It’s amazing the kind of things that people will say when they are in an argument. The sons of Abraham according to the flesh had passed under the Roman yoke after spending centuries in bondage to Egypt, and Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Alexander the Great, the Ptolemies, and the Syrian (Seleucid) kings. Yet these “believers” had the nerve to argue, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” This was denial at its finest.

Those Jews “who believed Jesus” soon revealed why He frequently does not believe “believers.” As the late G.W. North once said, “God doesn’t believe you! He is the great unbeliever. God’s got to be able to believe us!” Their faith was exposed in all its fickleness. Many people believe well so long as they think God agrees with them; but when challenged to agree with God “these poor believers soon came to the end of their faith” (Stier quoted in Vincent).

Anytime you read the phrase “do you not know” in scripture it is generally because the people do not know what is being said. They either once knew and forgot or they never knew at all. Nevertheless, Paul faces the same ignorance that Jesus dealt with. Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? Adam plunged the human race into slavery to Sin when he disobeyed God. Rebellion came in and handcuffed itself to man (if you will). We are slaves to what we yield ourselves to no matter how free we pretend to be.

One Nation Under Sin

In 1831 Samuel Francis Smith penned the words, “My country, ’tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, […] From ev’ry mountainside Let freedom ring!” In those days America prided itself as the arsenal of freedom. Seven years later twenty-eight year old Abraham Lincoln asked a question in Springfield, Ill. that today reads more like a prophecy, “At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? — Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! — All the the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”

Nearly two hundred years later multitudes in America are laboring under the tyranny of Sin. The days when she boarded the ship are now a distant memory. It’s seems like yesterday that she stood upon the auction block and sold her soul to the Devil. Behold the pitiful sight of haggard sinners wearing their shakles as a badge of honor! Having been promised liberty by those who were themselves servants of corruption  the nation of once freemen smile as they fall upon their own sword.

My fellow countrymen, do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? You say that all the the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. But do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

True Freedom

The first step to true freedom is to acknowledge you are in bondage to Sin to begin with. Not as the Jews in John 8 who would rather argue knowing good and well they were wrong rather than acknowledge the truth. And political correctness is not going to save you  nor is the Supreme Court. No matter how many laws this nation passes in order to legitimize sin- sin is still sin. What makes the difference whether it’s legal sin or illegal sin?

America has legalized most every kind of sin and are working on the rest. A cursory look at the Ten Commandments reveals that only theft is purely illegal. Murder is illegal, but a child can be terminated in the third-trimester and the killer not be charged. False witness is illegal in court or in regards to official business — but it is “legal” to lie to most anyone else. Drugs (sorcery) is becoming more lawful every year as is all kinds of sexual immorality. This helps us make sense of Revelation 9:20-21 “But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.” (NKJV) Sorceries is from pharmakeuoœ, from which we get our English word pharmacy meaning “to prepare drugs” (A. T. Robertson). These are not aspirins, but spell-binding drugs.

The only hope for people who are under bondage to sin is to repent and turn to Christ in faith. Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Why Many People Are Beyond Redemption

Why Many People Are Beyond Redemption
Robert Wurtz II

I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early. (Hos 5:15)

If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. (1Jn 1:9-10)

I have chosen these passages from both the Old and New Testament, as they capture the essence of our times. We have become a nation of people that refuse to acknowledge sin as sin. In fact, as we close the year 2013 we have watched many long held standards drop like flies in America. Homosexual marriage and practice continues to gain ground while polygamists and even pedophiles hasten their day in court to be ruled a protected demographic. The Boy Scouts of America have been infiltrated by homosexuality as the media blasts all opposition as bigots. Sadly, many professing believers in Christ, who have homosexual tendencies themselves, are coming out on the side of silence or acceptance. Add to that the fact that hundreds of licenses are being distributed in Colorado for the sale of recreational marijuana. It is only a matter of time until we are completely overrun with vileness and evil in this nation.

What’s Wrong With It?

In 2013 there were thousands of children that were born in an era when both homosexual marriage and marijuana use was legal. Try to fathom the implications of that. From now on all children born in 2014 and beyond will grow up having no idea that these things are wrong, unless a true Christian unafraid of opposition tells them. Sadly so-called Christians will defend both of these sins- causing even more confusion. Books will be written defending mind altering drugs. Why? Because the truth is, the defenders were smoking pot and taking mind altering drugs all the while they were professing Christ and now is their chance to do it openly. Their attitude will be the same as everything else, “What’s wrong with it?”

 A Conscious Minority

Sometime in the 1980’s the late Leonard Ravenhill quoted a Christian professor who predicted that by the year 2000, “Christianity will be a conscious minority surrounded by an arrogant militant paganism.” If we were surrounded in 2000, in 2013 they launched a full-scale attack! Every moral standard is under attack.

The early strategy is to wait out the opposition until they get tired of resisting and then slowly insert the compromise as if it were normal. Politicians know that as time passes resistance to immorality cools. They know they have stacked the school system with fallen heads influenced by devils, with only a hand full of faithful believers sprinkled in the mix. The largest generation in history is growing up with a Godless and immoral education and there are few in Sunday schools to make an impact. We are on the road to Sodom and Gomorrah; the gates are now within sight.

Why They Are Hopeless

I found in 2013 a hostility to decency and holiness that I can only describe as vexing and angering. I am conscious of the fact that as Christians we cannot allow anger to become a force in our lives, so I must resist anger and pray for grace to tolerate the vexation. I even caught resistance among seasoned Christians and ministers in 2013- trying to cry out against the compromise that is killing us. Christianity, as it has been known since the Reformation, is completely under assault and often from within. In Catholic circles things are only worse, as a leading Gay magazine named the pope as “man of the year.”

Until They Acknowledge

No people that excuse their sin can find redemption or forgiveness. The first step is always to acknowledge our sins. When sin is marginalized and condoned their is no hope for the person. God spoke to Israel through the prophet with these responding words, “I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offense…” God and man can’t even talk about a way forward until man acknowledges his offenses. It is the first step. We have to let God be true and every man a liar. We have to say the same thing that God says about our conduct. It is the key to forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 tells us, If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The key word in this verse is “if”. It is conditional. Our Greek word for acknowledge (confess in the KJV) is homologeo. This is two words: homo and logos and means literally “same word.” We have to say the same thing about sin that God says about sin. We have to say the same things are sin that God calls sin. Until we do, God will “return to His place.”

Revival in 2014

Many things have been done in the last 20 years while the churches and society nearly bled out all of its morality and sanctification. We must return to the message of acknowledging our sins and repenting of them. It is our only hope. If we continue down this road Christians will be forced underground by the militant paganism of American and Western society. They are using words now, but in time they will employ stronger measures.

Forget everything else. We need a revival of repentance and true regeneration of sinners. The souls of the Visible Church and the western Nations are at stake. God can save by many or by few. May each of us be found on the right side of the battle field (as it were) when the Lord returns and the smoke clears. Many Christians and ministers are going to have to decide in 2014 what side they are on. Why should we use our callings, talents and giftings to defend sin and compromise- when God has given them to the churches for such a time as this?
